UGCL is an Affinity Group Social event to be held in conjunction with EACL 2021 (the 16th conference of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics). Though this event is targeted towards undergraduate students, everyone broadly interested in pursuing a career in machine learning or linguistics is welcome.
UGCL aims to provide a platform for undergraduate students to discuss their research interests and draw a perspective regarding the current research inclination among budding researchers. Other than networking activities, the event would feature talks and QnA sessions with current grad students and corporate researchers. It intends to facilitate the attendees with advice and guidance on pursuing a career in research.

The event comprises two sessions, details of which have been briefly outlined below:
- Session 1 (19th April 1130 to 1300 HRS EEST or UTC+3): Networking session (Click here for local time)
In this session, students would be facilitated to network among themselves so that they get to know one another and build friendships early to connect during the conference. This session would also enable the attendees to draw a perspective regarding the current research trends among this community as well as provide a platform to talk about their areas of interest. It would also attempt to facilitate them to discuss other relevant topics, such as recent research works that inspire them or some exciting research projects being done at their respective universities.
- Session 2 (20th April 1600 to 1700 HRS EEST or UTC+3): Talks and QnA (Click here for local time)
The second session would feature short talks from current grad students and corporate researchers, followed by a discussion session. This session would focus on enlightening the attendees with information regarding what different research career paths look like and reasons why (or why not) one should be pursuing a certain path. Moreover, they would get a chance to discuss with the speakers any queries they have. More information about the speakers has been provided in the section below.
- 1:1 Sessions: We are looking into the feasibility of organising 1:1 sessions between UG students and mentors. In case you are interested, kindly highlight the same in the registration form. We shall reach out to you over email with more details.
Speakers
- Koustuv Saha (Georgia Tech): Koustuv Saha is a PhD student in Computer Science at Georgia Tech. His research interests are in Social Computing and Computational Social Science. With an overall industry experience of five years, he has also had research internships at Snap Research, Microsoft Research, Max Planck Institute, and Fred Hutch Cancer Research during his PhD. Earlier, he completed his B.Tech (Hons.) in Computer Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur.

- Sohan Patro (Microsoft Redmond): Sohan Patro is a Software Engineer at Microsoft Redmond, with prior experience in the role of a Data Scientist while working at Microsoft Research. He is an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur alumnus with Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering. He has also been a part of ITRI Taiwan for an internship.

- Sopan Khosla (Cargenie Mellon University): Sopan Khosla is an incoming PhD student (presently a second-year Master’s student) in the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He is interested in coreference resolution, discourse modelling, information extraction from conversations, and applications of NLP to healthcare. Previously, he completed his Bachelor’s in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee where he was awarded the Director’s Gold Medal. He also worked as a Research Engineer at Adobe Research India for two years.
